Catalonia days 5/6: Medieval town, Beautiful Begur, Peaceful Beaches

Inside the beautiful medieval village of Peratallada

We intended on visiting the town of Girona more but we had a hard time finding parking and I really wanted to check out a town called Peratallada.   So after about 10 minutes of searching for a parking spot we said screw it, let's move on.

Why Peratallada?  Such a random place to go kind of in the middle of nowhere.  Well, thanks to google, I found a few sites that mentioned this medieval village and the pictures looked pretty.  If you haven't caught on by now you know we can't turn down pretty and off the beaten path type places we find on google haha!

Ok so this place is out in the middle of nowhere.   There weren't even street signs for it until we were a couple miles out.  When we pulled up and it looked like a tourist trap place on the outside... I could physically feel Dan's cringe.  However,  we got like 100 feet into the place and we both were pretty mesmerized!

100 or so feet into this place... what?!

Yeah, it was incredibly beautiful and so fun to walk around the tiny streets.  It didn't seem renotely busy once we got lost in the village either.  There were a lot of different shops and restaurants.   We stopped for some wine and beer and tapas.

Then just walked around in awe of the place.  Words don't do it justice so here are pictures:

From there we drove to our next hotel in Begur.  Again, we were blown away by the sights just from our hotel!  I would definitely recommend this boutique hotel, El Ces de Begur.  I found this particular hotel on booking.com for a great deal!  If you want a discount via booking try this link out:

We enjoyed some wine from the hotel bar and then headed into Begur town to try and find a place to eat.  I'm going to spare the details on how insane hilly this place is, but the walk up to the city center was incredibly brutal and resulted in a few colorful words by me...

We originally tried to go to a restaurant but we were the only ones there and the only food they had was hummus.  The place kinda reminded me of a blair witch project location so we had our beers and hummus and left promptly.

The city center was really cool and had several restaurants that were quite crowded.

So we opted to go to a bar called Sa Taverna for a beer or two until it thinned out.

Well... in typical Dan and Trista fashion, we kinda had one or two beers too many and opted for a few bar snacks, which were delicious!  I probably should mention that I have a weird obsession with trying out chips from other countries since chips are my all time favorite food.

We had a ton of fun at that bar.  Obviously...

And were quite full after all our snacking so decided to head back to the hotel.   We did get distracted and had another beer along the way but got to meet the cutest Pomeranian dog named Noah!  I was quite happy to meet Duke's twin while away from home.

Bed time then happened.

We woke up the next day to head out to the local beaches.   Our first stop was at Sa Riera which was a 3 minute drive away.

It was a super cute and relaxing and scenic beach area.  And the water was the most crystal clear I've seen to date!  You could see a ton of fish swimming all around your feet.  It was pretty cool!

Next stop was Sa Tuna.   Another very beautiful stop.

Last stop was to Llafranc.   The largest and probably most scenic beach.  But the waves were insane so I didn't end up getting in the water (Dan did).  I should also mention that the water was insane ice cold!  Though it did feel good on our sore bodies from walking up European style hills this whole trip.

We enjoyed a couple glasses of wine before the intention of heading back to the hotel to freshen up and go out in Begur town once more but passed a large grocery store and decided, why not?  One of our favorite things to do on trips is check out the local grocery stores to see what the locals eat.  It kinda gives you a glimpse of how it would be living in a foreign country.   We got several meats, some cheese, bread, crackers, wine (and a corkscrew because our room doesn't have one) and chocolate for like $12 for the entire meal!  One of the bottles of wine cost $1!!  We spent around $40ish total which included 3 bottles of wine and have plenty leftover for lunch tomorrow.

We head back to Barcelona for our last 2 nights, and while I'm excited to check it out... the surrounding Catalonian areas are well worth the visit!  We've encountered hidden beautiful gems, wonderful locals and delicious food and drinks.  I know we've said this before, but people here really have been super kind and gracious with our bumbling attempts at Spanish.   Thank you so much for making us Okies feel welcome here!
