Dubrovnik: King's Landing, Rakija, Buza Bar and Buzz Bar

Dubrovnik was such a neat place, I truly wish we had gotten to check it out way before the crowds got wind of it from being a huge feature of the series, Game of Thrones.  I can see how it would be such a magical place to really explore and I got Brian to write up a guest blog on our last stop.  He did want to make a disclaimer that he's not a writer lol, but I do think he did a good job.  Without further adieu, here's Brian!

The last leg of our Croatia trip was Dubrovnik. We traveled there by ferry from Hvar and Uber’d to our Air B&B. Our host was an older lady who was nice but also chatted a bit too long for our tastes. She did author a book though and I thought that was neat.

We stayed right outside the walls of the old city.
This was our view from the sidewalk by our place.

Our first day we walked the interior of the old city. There are an unbelievable amount of stairs. However, they are beautiful and provide some nice photo ops.

We stopped for a break at the famous Buza Bars that sits on the cliff edge against the city wall. The view of the ocean is amazing here! A must see in my opinion.

Day 2 we traveled to the observatory above the city. Even though it was overcast we still got a great view! Be sure to stop for a drink or two in the restaurant. We also got a visit from a herd of goats!

We then went out and had Rakija.  Lots of Rakija.  Rakija is their local shooter type drink. Buzz Bar was our favorite stop for Rakija and craft beer.

Day 3 we ate lunch by the ocean then walked the walls of the city. It began raining and the steps became very slippery. We saw several falls and nearly fell ourselves a few times. Halfway around the sun came out. The scenic views are well worth the walk.

Shame!  Shame!!

After we walked the walls of Dubrovnik we went outside of the old town to a cave bar. It’s definitely a very unique place to get a drink. It was hard to get any good pictures inside that would do it justice.

A side note: there were stray cats everywhere we stopped in Croatia. Shelby tried to pet all of them!

The general feeling we all got from the trip is that Croatia is a very laid back place. No one seems to be in a big hurry and you see lots of people just hanging out in the middle of the day. The picture below is a great reminder of how relaxing it felt there.

I would definitely recommend going. Thought our trip was about right in each place. Could’ve used one more day in Split for more time in Zadar. I liked how laid back people were. And was surprised how friendly they were since most media portrayals of people from soviet countries is quite negative (Trista here: yeah, if your only news source is Fox News... most people who have traveled abroad  generally find people kind hearted and nice... but I digress...). Also thought Croatia was really pretty. With the natural beauty and the old architecture there was always something to look at.

  1. This look's like a really beautiful place to visit, I can imagine how many more people visit now since Game of Thrones!

    1. It was absolutely incredible! One of the most beautiful places I've ever been. That being said, the crowds were pretty absurd. I would recommend probably going during slower season, we went at the very beginning of busy season and it was almost way too much.
